As the Mother Church of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, it holds the cathedra, or bishop's chair, and is recognized as the bishop's official church.

The Diocese of Saint Paul was established by the Vatican in 1850 and elevated to an Archdiocese in 1888. In 1966 the name was expanded to include Minneapolis. It serves a 12-county area, containing 222 parishes, with approximately 800,000 Catholics. There are currently over 400 priests and 1,400 religious sisters, brothers and deacons who serve in the parishes as well as many other ministries. Each year, thousands of Catholics throughout the diocese come to the Cathedral to celebrate the significant events in their faith lives. Confirmations, Ordinations, and the Rite of Election for catechumens who are entering the Church all occur at the Cathedral.

Night photo taken by Mitch of http://www.mitchster.com/ Thank you.

Chapel by the Lake

Printed by permission by Gwyn of Juneau Daily Photo

The log chapel was constructed in the mid-1950's. This is one of the many missions established by Father Eusebio Francisco Kino, the explorer, cartographer, and Franciscan priest who is responsible for the chain of missions running from within Mexico to northern California. This mission was abandoned by 1848 and began its fall into disrepair until 1908 when the area was declared a National Monument by President Theodore Roosevelt. Restoration continues today although very slowly. In 1937 a museum was built at the National Monument which later became a National Park.

The mission is located in Southern Arizona between Tucson and the border with Mexico. Photos don’t really do it justice. Juan Riobo records: "I sang a Mass of Thanksgiving for the safe voyage...a little Indian girl was baptized."

In 1872, Rome placed the Alaskan territory under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Victoria, BC, the closest diocese. Bishop John Seghers of Victoria made his first visit to Alaska in 1873. He established St. Rose of Lima, the first Catholic parish in Alaska, in Wrangell on May 3, 1879, just 100 years after the Spanish priests had been here. Fr. John Althoff, a diocesan priest of the Victoria diocese, was appointed pastor, with missions in Sitka and Juneau.

There has been a continuous Catholic presence on this same block of Fifth Street since 1885, when Fr. John Althoff was assigned to pastor the growing mining community in the silverbow Basin. Fr. Althoff's little church, built in 1886, was replaced in 1910 with the present structure. The original church was at Stockton and O'Farrell Streets, where Macy's west coast flagship store now sits. In 1894, the parish occupied this building which it had built, having outgrown the original site - and the population of the city having moved west. In the 1906 earthquake and fire, the church was nearly destroyed by fire crews dynamiting buildings trying to stop the fire. Most of the water mains in the city had broken in the quake. The pastor begged the fire crews to try an adjacent water main. It worked and the church was spared. The basement of the church became a hospital and soup kitchen for earthquake victims. The church took a serious hit in the 1989 earthquake. In 2006, an $11,000,000 restoration and earthquake retrofitting was completed. In contrast to the rather stern exterior, the interior is very warm and comforting. The acoustics are superb. In the restoration, the church was fitted with a superb Baroque-style tracker organ.

I added two more pics. One of Paul and Yuna and one of the interior.

Temple de Hirsch

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_NJBHj5ne5q8/SNz_Y2peaMI/AAAAAAAADeU/JBbOVdsJKmo/s400/temple+de+hirsch+1029.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5250352068058572994" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_NJBHj5ne5q8/SNz_YztzNhI/AAAAAAAADec/Qr2WWNTnmIE/s400/800px-Seattle-Alhadeff-Sanctuary-3604.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5250352067271407122" />
In 1899 a Reform congregation was organised and designated Temple de Hirsch. they met in a small hall but were determined to build a large temple. This church was built in the late 1800s.
